(AB) 'Sir Dighton Probyn'

1909, Foster

'Sir Dighton Probyn' (Sir Michael Foster before 1909) IMB, Color code=S, ( iberica X pallida ) Introduced by Perry 1919; Bonnewitz 1920; Award of Merit Royal Horticultural Society 1909, shown by Perry.

Perry in Gardeners’ Chronicle, p.274, 1909 notes: "Iris hybrida Sir Dighton Probyn (I. pallida dalmatica x I. iberica). — A very handsome and showy plant of good stature and considerable merit. The standards or erect petals are coloured a rosy mauve and faintly though freely lined with white. The purplish crimson or reddish falls are of a large size and are rendered more conspicuous by a signal or blotch of dark velvet colour. The style-branches are coloured a rich brownish crimson, which renders the variety very conspicuous. The variety, too, is possessed of a fine habit, and this largely partaking of I. pallida will render it most welcome for the decoration of the garden. From Mr. Amos Perry, Enfield."
