In The Gardeners' Chronicle May 29, 1904; There was an article TWO NEW HYBRID IRISES. It read "One of the most interesting features at the meeting of the Royal Horticultural Society on May 17 was a collection of new Irises shown by C.G. Van Tubergen, junr., Haarlem, Holland. Seven varieties were given awards by the Floral Committee, and of these we illustrate two on pp. 348, 349 that obtained First Class Certificates. They all belonged to the Onco-Regelia group. "Charon," shown in fig. 150, is said to be from a cross between I. Korolkowii and I. atro-purpurea. It is one of the most distinct and beautiful Irises we have seen. The dominating colours are old gold and bronze. The color of the falls, excepting the nearly white margin, is of a mahogany shade reticulated with gold, and having a heavy black blotch at the base. The standards are much the same as the falls, but suffused nearly all over with purple.
From The Court Of Iris catalog, 1955: Charon is of course the 'dark boatman' who met souls and ferried them across the river Styx. Here we have different coloring from most in this section. It is a bronzy gold-buff with an infusion of reddish mahogany and veins of deep mahogany. Signal patch blackish red. Very early bloom. 16". $2.00.

From Supplement To The Comprehensive Checklist of Aril and Arilbred Iris by Sharon McAllister, April 2000: CHARON AR (C. G. Van Tubergen, BRS). Sdlg #NIA.RC. Height and bloom season NIA. I korolkowii var. venosa X I atropurpurea. AIS Color Class: S6D: (yellow squalens withbitone pattern). No description in '76 Checklist. Rainbow: "EE-16". Standards light buff, flushed dark crimson, impressively veined in mahogany. Falls golden buff, veined in dark reddish mahogany, with large black-mahogany signal. Flower glitters as if sprinkled with gold dust. Pollen bright yellow. Valette: "buff, flushed and veined mahogany; black mahogany signal; effect brown." Van Tubergen before 1907. Notes: Name approved; ASI '66 YB, p. 63, identifies the pod parent as I korolkowii var. concolor; counted as a 21-chromosome diploid, an RC in both systems.
