First Iris Websites
1996: Only 7 years after the invention of the World Wide Web and 5 years after its introduction to the general public the first "Iris Society Website" was created by Mike Lowe. It was actually two website is one. The first was created for a putative society the World Iris Association which was being discussed but was never formed. Its goal was to service the irisarians around the world with information about Iris much as the present Encyclopedia attempts to do. At the time the American Iris Society was over 8,000 members strong and it was thought that there were about 2000 irisarians in other parts of the world many of whom had no national or regional Iris Society. The discussion from the original site is copied
here. The second part was a website of the Historic Iris Society, HIPS and provided a great deal of Iris history. For a view of the Home page of this historic site look
here.
Also in 1996 Scott Aitken launched an initiative to create a website for the American Iris Society. it was located on the url http://www.isomedia.com/homes/AIS. This site lasted until
1998: When Mike Lowe and Scott Aitken were charged by the AIS board to create a URL for an American Iris Society Website. Irises.org is still in use today although it has undergone many changes.
