The timeline up until 1753 includes Irises that were known and written about but not within the modern taxonomic system. Today's system starts in 1753 with the publication of Species Plantarum by Linneaus. Linneaus knew of 17 species which are listed in the next time period. Before 1753 various authors used various names and were not following a single system of naming. See 1751-1800
