References

From Cornell Extension Bulletin 112: "Color effect an old gold, velvety maroon veined bicolor. S. honey yellow to old gold, much undulated. F. velvety maroon-brown to blackish brown, distinctly veined to a point one-half inch from the end of the blade. The edge blends yellow to old gold on the haft. Occasional lavender or cream-white flecks occur on the blade. This plant is a vigorous grower , and has stiff, slender, deep green foliage, tinged purple at the base. The flower spikes are tall and well and widely branched. Its very late bloom, its dull color combinations like those found in the Cypripedium orchid, and its early history, being a parent of the variegata groups, make it still worthy of selection."
Note: The 1929 Checklist notates GQ as a TB, but this was changed to IB in the 1939 edition.

Note: There is an impostor that has floated about for decades under the name GQ. . The true GQ has no flush of rose to the standards and the falls are very dark in tone, often appearing black. -- MikeUnser - 2013-12-10; I've added a photo of a very common variety that has been going around for at least 20 years under the name Gypsy Queen. It is a lovely little iris, but is not the real GQ. The real GQ has deep black cherry tones to the falls and the standards are old gold. All petals are elongated. The impostor has a rosy tint in the standards and the falls are a brighter violet. The form is more rounded and symmetrical. -- MikeUnser - 2017-02-25
