Hybridizer: Joy Flint

Victoria, British Columbia, Canada

When Joy Flint was request by the then Lt. Governor for BC, Dr. David Lamm, to restore the gardens of Government House in Victoria Joy donated her then-existing iris collection to the project. She retained only her hybrids which were part of her hybriding program. Joy's aim was to product a large, vibrant clear-coloured flower on a strong stem. Many seedlings were produced and discarded over time, but eventually her efforts produced a copper-coloured hybrid that was introduced into commerce under the name of 'Spicy Twist'.

Joy's hybriding expanded with her desire to explore the world of Iridacea and its many associated plants. Japanese iris were to become the next frontier of Joy's hybridizing program where she made many attempts to produce a flower that retained the traditional shape and traits of the original combined with a more varied range of colour. A prolonged illness lead to the cancellation of Joy's hybridizing program and the loss of the many seedlings under cultivation, (by C. Ross Flint, taken from the 2011 AIS Nat'l Convention handbook)
