Hybridizer Ella Porter McKinney (1869 - 1944)

Madison, New Jersey, USA

Ella Porter McKinney wrote Iris in the Little Garden (1927). Like other writers in The Little Garden series of books from the 1920s, she was involved with a local garden club in Madison, New Jersey, and the National Garden Club of America. She was an AIS Director in 1927 as well as and associate editor of the Bulletin of the American Iris Society from 1928 to 1932. She got married in Kentucky in 1890 to Dr. C. S. McKinney so many of the old articles that mention her list her as Mrs. C. S. McKinney. She moved to Madison, New Jersey shortly after getting married. She had no children, but had a brother and sister in California. Ella died on January 31, 1944, aged 75.
