Kent, England. "Retired Textile Printer, Amateur gardener, botanist, plant-collector, traveller, celebrated Alpinist, authority on textile printing with a remarable collection of Indian examples. Authority, also on rare Bulbous Irises, breeder of Bulbous and Bearded varieties, active member and President of the Alpine Society for some years; one of the founders of the Iris Soc. (Eng.) and president of it 1924, 1925, Vice-President 1931-1938. Awarded the Foster Memorial Plaque 1932, Victoria Medal of Honour 1933. Author of many books and articles on textile printing, and on horticultural subjects." (AIS Alphabetical Iris Check List, 1939)
