Botanical author

Jean-Louis Marie Poiret was a French clergyman, botanist and explorer. He worked with Jean-Baptiste Pierre Antoine de Monet, chevalier de Lamarck, in the dafting the "Dictionnaire de Botanique de l'Encyclopédie méthodique"(1785), then was sent by Louis XVI to study Algerian flora (1785-1786). He published "Voyage en Barbarie, ou Lettres écrites de l'ancienne Numidie pendant les années 1785 & 1786, sur la Religion, les Coutumes & les mœurs des Maures & des Arabes Bédouins, avec un Essai sur l'histoire naturelle de ce Pays" (1789, J.B.F. Née de la Rochelle, Paris, 2 volumes : XXIV+364 p., 317 p.). Unfrocked during the French Revolution, married (1795) and became professor of natural history at the Central School of Aisne.
