(SPEC) 'White Pearl'

White Pearl 1910, Wallace

'White Pearl' (Wallace, 1910) The Garden 76: 640. 21 December 1912 gives:

"INTERESTING WINTER IRIS.

One of the most interesting plants at the meeting of the Royal Horticultural Society, held on the 3rd inst., was the charming little Iris of which we give an illustration. This was shown by Messrs. R. Wallace and Co., and is an albino form of Iris Vartanii, its full name being I. Vartanii White Pearl. I. Vartanii belongs to the reticulata group, which comprises I growers have given up the task.
I only propose some of the daintiest and sweetest-scented of our winter flowers, and was sent to the late Sir Michael Foster by Dr. Vartan of Nazareth, after whom it was named. The variety White Pearl was sent to this country from Palestine in 1910 as a white form of I. histrioides. The flowers are pure wliite, with the exception of a yellow bar on the falls.

Award of Merit, Royal Horticultural Society 1913, shown by Wallace; Journal of the Royal Horticultural Society 39: ccxlvii. April 1914. The Garden 77: 576, November 1913 gives; Iris Vartani White Pearl. — A delightful and nearly pure white form of this early-flowering species. The pretty flowers are 4 inches to 5 inches high, and arise amid pointed leafage of nearly twice that height. The species is most probably closely allied to I. reticulata, and with the white form here given is well suited to the alpine-house. From Messrs. R. W. Wallace and Co., Colchester."
