| From Adamgrove catalog, 1997: WICHITA FAREWELL (Fry-Waddick, 97). Species Iris (Apogon, Series Ensatae). Jim and Lucy Fry, of Wichita, Kansas, will forever be remembered for their interest in and collection of miniature dwarf bearded irises. But they had a truly magnificent clump of this species, grown from seed collected by Georg Rodionenko, the pre-eminent Russian iris researcher. This one differs from the usual by being such a rich manganese violet, and rather smoothly applied, at that. The seed came as I. moorcroftiana, which is usually considered a synonym (one of many) of I. lactea. Out of deference to Dr. Rodionenko, we've retained the name as a varietal designation. However, if you have a hard time fitting the whole thing on your labels, just calling it a lactea will do fine. While assembling stalks for this photograph, we were also quite taken by an exquisitely subtle fragrance, a bit like that of old-fashioned violets. It refreshed us (not overpowered) for several days on our dining table. Plants of this have already been distributed, occasionally with the epithet "Kirghiz" attached. Stock is rather limited. Presumably 40 chromosomes. [from I. lactea seed originating in Kirghizia, Central Asia] $20.00
