X-Files

Botanical names representing hybrid crosses have an X before what would normally be the species epithet. Like other botanical names they are italicized with the exception of the X. A common computer error automatically italicizes the x also.

An X name like Iris xrobusta designates hybrids involving the two or more species, no matter what generation from the original cross. The cross may be one that occurred in nature or was man-made. In our example xrobusta designates hybrids that involve both Iris virginica and Iris versicolor. Xrobusta would appear in alphabetical lists under R not X.
