(TB) 'Blue Glow'

1942, Nicholls

'Blue Glow' ( Col. Jesse Nicholls, 1942) TB, Late bloom season. Color Class B1D. 'West Point' x 'Mata Hari'.

From Fairmount Gardens catalog, 1948: BLUE GLOW (Nicholls 1948) L. Lighter in color than Black Banner this iris has good carrying qualities in the garden. Almost a self, save for the lighter tone of violet in the standards. Smoothly finished flowers and well branched stalks. 38 in. $7.50.

"Blue Glow appealed strongly to my colour sense. The rich shade of blue without striation was very striking. The brown flush on the shoulders of the haft was a great addition to its colour value. This same brown is seen on the haft and continues into the heart of 'Master Charles'. This, and the brown tipped beard of the last named give great distinction and an unusual richness to these two varieties." [Gwendolyn Anley, (England), “American Irises in English Gardens,” The Bulletin of the American Iris Society, No. 107, “Iris Ramblings” (October 1947): 7.]

From Schreiner's Catalog, 1952: BLUE GLOW (Nicholls 1945) ML. 36". A rich shade of deep indigo blue with varnished-like smoothness and luster. Enticingly marked with a brown flush on the haft. An extremely fine Iris, fragrant. See page 2. HM'48. $1.50; 3 for $4.00.
