From Cooley's Gardens catalog for 1940: "No flower was ever more appropriately named. The stalks rise to a height of four feet, bearing close to a dozen great blooms with large closed standards and wide flaring falls. This is far and away ahead of other tan iris now on the market. It is a Kleinsorge seedling introduced by us last season."
From Cooley's Gardens catalog for 1941: "Bearing a most appropriate title, this iris is by far the best tan in our entire collection. The stalks rise to a height of four feet, bearing close to a dozen great blooms with large closed standards and wide flaring falls. Practically a self in color, it makes a magnificent companion to the blue of 'Great Lakes'. Note the perfection of form in the picture on page 8."
(1948) I have used Buckskin in breeding, but my diary's reaction to the first bloom of this golden tan self was "haft badly reticulated, good branching, but not enough substance." [A Critical Evaluation of Older Iris, A.I.S. Bulletin 110:55/July 1948]
(1946) Blooming in the garden of Mrs. John Thomas in Columbus I was impressed with its soft shades of salmon and orange (Ohio). [Unknown author, Varietal Comment. A.I.S Bulletin 101:72/April 1946]
