BURNING BRONZE (Ayres 1934) M. 40". A cool, stately dark red self of excellent form and smooth shimmering finish. The stems have a grace and dignity quite different from other varieties. Dark reds usually give a somber garden effect, but an intense bronze suffusion gives this a color rarely vital and alive. Highly recommeded. $6.50. H.M., A.I.S. 1933. [1937 Quality Gardens catalog, Freeport, IL].
Burning Bronze. Seems to be somewhat erratic in its habits or does it not form habits. The first year with me, color, quality, form and stalk left nothing to be desired, while vigor and flowers were not so good, but what can you expect on a first year plant? The second year a late frost could be blamed for no bloom, but this year after a phenomenal hot spell in April followed by heavy frosts that prevented so many irises from blooming at all, or created irregular bloom, this iris did finely. [Mrs. Herman E. Lewis, "Varietal Notes 1938", A.I.S. Bulletin 72 (January 1939): 10.]
Wayman, 1943: Burning Bronze—40 in. Unsurpassed brilliant red tones. 0.30c.
Burning Bronze(Ayres). Have observed it now for five years. It is the smoothest snappiest red bronze I have ever seen with perfect stalk and flower, foliage not so good but well worthy of highest award. [Belsley, Ray J., Varietal Comments. Bulletin of the American Iris Society 74 (July 1939), 16.]
