CHECKMATE (Tompkins 1963) M.L. 38 in. ((Privateer x Rampage) x Ranger)) x (Tells Sdlg. x Privateer). This is the very sleek, glistening red that was so much admired along with 'Donnybrook' during the 1960 Convention. Until now, stock has been too scarce for release. It is very large, extremely heavy as to substance and has especially beautiful form and finish, likely heritages of the onco in its origin, Tell having used a couple of oncobreds in his seedling. It is a dark carmine self. The broad silken strands, heavily midribbed, are gracefully ruffled and domed and the extra broad falls are semi-flaring, nearly horizontal with a glistening lacquer-like finish with the rich Carmine color deepening around the center to the rich bronze beard where a blue ray emanates in a pattern that you recognize as an undertoned but definite signal patch once you remember the trace of onco in its ancestry. Hardy and a fine grower, it is wonderfully branched and has many buds to the socket, giving a long season of bloom. No. 56- 1. 25.00. Fleur De Lis Gardens, Canby, Oregon, Catalog, 1963.
