From Carl Salbach catalog 1936: Clara Noyes. An unusual new variety with colors blended much as in a Talisman rose. Low growing, but so distinct that it is entirely different from any other iris. Standards tan, flushed heliotrope; falls reddish bronze, lined deeper bronze. Yellow beard and haft undertone of the same color. Decidedly popular. Should be ordered early, as the demand is heavy. A.M., A.I.S., 1932. Rhizomes naturally small. Midseason. 22-inch. 75c, 3 for $2.00.
From Sass catalog, 1937: CLARA NOYES (H. P. Sass, 1931) A gorgeous blend of orange yellow, and red of Talisman rose coloring. Honorable Mention, 1931; Award of Merit, 1932. $1.00
1939 Checklist citations: Bull. A.I.S. 42:18 Jan. 1932; Bull. A.I.S. 46:5 Jan. 1933.
CLARA NOYES. Bicolor, veined blend S9L Sass, H. P. 1930-31. Very ruffled flower; S. fawn to russet vinaceous; F. widely veined livid brown on amber yellow; 33 in. Widely branched; wire edge on standards and falls. S. frilled and fluted; F. drooping, ruffled; beard orange; the pale purplish vinaceous haft conspicuous; the orange beard not. A lovely pinkish apricot mass for the garden. H.M., 1931; A.M., 1932. R. S. Sturtevant, "Descriptions of Varieties, Part VI", A.I.S. Bulletin 53 (October 1934): 28.
CLARA NOYES. A lovely warm blend from Hans Sass. At the time of my visit to his garden in 1930 I selected this as my favorite, and was equally impressed again last season. It was the favorite of all visitors to our own planting last May, and all of our available stock was quickly sold out. The coloring is a medley of peach and apricot tones, suggesting perhaps the rich and brilliant blendings of the rose TALISMAN. Sherman Duffy says of it: "Perhaps the most strikingly colored of all the new irises I saw this year and one that attracted attention wherever shown. A very brilliant and beautiful iris that everyone wanted at sight." Each $6.50; three for $15.00 Cooley's Wholesale pricelist, 1932.
CLARA NOYES is an answer to those who would take the tweezers away from zealous hybridists. Although it is a wonderful advance in blends, the form and texture are in need of improvement. Dornblut, J., Bellingham, Wash. Varietal Notes, American Iris Society Bulletin 55 (February 1935), 99.
