From Longfield Iris Farms catalog, 1955: DEEP BLACK (No. 9951) (Black Forest X Cook dark seedling) From the moment this striking "black" Iris unfolded among the seedlings, it has been and continues to be the favorite of garden visitors. Despite its extreme darkness, it is a lustrous, rich addition to Mr. Cook's already fine list of dark introductions. Standards are deep blackish violet of glossy finish; falls are solid jet black velvet from haft to outer end; the whole rich color effect is enhanced by bright deep violet beards. Flowers medium to large, of excellent form and good substance. Stems erect, branched at middle, 3 feet tall. Plant of sturdy growth, hardy, dependable in bloom. Midseason-late. (Because of Deep Black's popularity, pre-catalogue sales have nearly booked all stock for this year.) $20.00.
From Fleur De Lis Gardens catalog 1956: DEEP BLACK (Cook 1955) ML. 36 in (Black Forest x (Dark Sdlg.). The newest and undoubtedly the darkest of Mr. Cooks'several fine black iris. The flowers are medium large and of heavy substance and rich glossy finish. Standards are very deep blackish violet and the fallare solid jet black with a velvety finish. The clean hafts and dark violet beard add to the depth. A real beauty. H. M. 1955. Net 20.00.
