'Flying Down To Rio' (Walter Moores, R. 2005). Seedling# 00-44-C. TB, 36" (91 cm), Early to midseason bloom. Standards light lavender edged brownish gilt, darker midrib; style arms lavender tinged brownish gilt; falls darker lavender, nearly solid medium brown hafts, a few white lines at beard, brown wire edge; beards orange red; ruffled; slight sweet fragrance. 'Arctic Fox' X 'Romantic Evening'. Moores 2006. Honorable Mention 2008.

• The exotic coloration of this iris shows what the parent 'Romantic Evening' can produce.

You name a characteristic of a good iris, and this iris has it.

The only drawback is that it usually blooms before show time or AIS Conventions and has not been seen by enough judges. It did win an H.M. and still has eligibility for an A.M.

Rio de Janerio has a fascination for many and I wanted rio in the name. I remembered the first pairing of Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire in 'Flying Down to Rio.' I think this is one of the first irises with four words in the name.
