From Walter Marx Gardens catalog 1957: GAY BORDER (De Forest 1949) Each .75. There are always new variations of surprises among the plicatas. Here is one that looks for all the world like a red and white iris. Exactly speaking, it is a clean, sparkling white flower with a contrasting bright maroon-rose border 3/8-inch wide. Tall and well branched, too; no wonder it is striking. HM 1949. |
"Gay Borders I did not care for; it struck me as rather cold and uninspiring in color. It is certainly unusual, a wide-banded plicata with a neutral white ground and old rose markings, and will undoubtedly appeal to some tastes more than to mine. Substance and form were good." John Dolman, Jr. (Pennsylvania), “From Aldan to Walden and Points North, DeForest Plicatas Outstanding,” The Bulletin of the American Iris Society, No. 123, (October 1951): 16. |
