'Pioneer' x
'Melchior' Cooley's 1934; Flower Grower 21: 6, 247. June 1934; 24: 6, June 1937 Black and white illustration.
Cooley's 1934 Catalog describes it as "A positive self of the darkest, yet most vivid, deep amethyst. It carries no veining wliatsoever, and the great depth of tone is intensified by a heavy brown beard, underlaid with blue. The texture is like silk, and the flowers are rounded in -shape, with nicely branched stalks 30 to 36 inches high. Robert Schreiner, seeing this in flower in the originator's garden this spring, declared it to be one of the greatest and most distinct irises turned out in recent years. Very few plants in existence."
