Louvois is an iris to remember. The peaked standards are milk chocolate, the falls rich, bitter chocolate with a wide border of the milk chocolate around the edges. The sun on the falls transforms them to the crimson velvet of a medieval wall hanging. [Lila McCombs, “A Critical Evaluation of Older Irises”, The Bulletin of the American Iris Society, No. 110 (July 1948): 58.] |
From Cooley's 1940 catalog: "Brown, deep, rich and velvety, like the lustrous fur of an animal. This new French sort has been one of the surprises of the past two years. Standards are a decided brown tone, the falls exceedingly dark brown, edged to match the standards." |
Outstanding deep red-brown bicolor; the falls are nicely edged with the lighter shade. Low. [Douglas, Geddes (1942). More Variety Comments, 1942. American Iris Society Bulletin, 88<(January 1943), 63.] |
