From Carl Salbach catalog, 1936: Naranja (Mitchell 1935). Richest of all the yellows, thanks to the definite orange cast of the falls. Distinctly orange while in bud, and so striking in color and size that it brought the first offer before the first bud had started to unfurl. Stands tall and straight, with huge blooms, having excellent substance. Dominated by the orange coloring of the falls, which, matched to the Ridgway color chart, are "zinc orange" at the haft, with yellow markings in center, and remainder of falls "ochraceous orunge." Standards bright empire yellow, with orange yellow beurd. Has all the attributes of color, form and habit necessary to rank this remarkable iris as one of the standouts of recent breeding. Late. 40-inch. $20.00.
1939 Checklist citations: Flower Grower 26: 8: 358 Aug. 1939 (Illustration); Bull. A.I.S. 63:62 Oct. 1936; Bull. A.I.S. 66:104 Sept. 1937.

Naranja: (Mitchell). A real orange colored iris, blossom smaller than one might suppose, petals somewhat spotted-color effect in garden quite unusual. Belsley, Ray J., Varietal Comments. Bulletin of the American Iris Society 74 (July 1939), 18.
From Schreiner's 1941: A new departure in color; a yellow with a distinct orangy overcast on the falls. The orange note is subdued rather than vivid and the blooms are a bit too broad amidships to represent the acme of grace and symmetry, but because of the unusual advance in color represented by this variety, it is one of the most talked about of recent introductions. We anticipate that it will become a very popular iris. Honorable Mention 1936; Award of Merit 1937. Salbach 1935
Naranja (Mitchell) was here and later I had the satisfaction of seeing it in two other gardens, always the same. It is a clear, well-proportioned yellow with a brownish overlay on the falls giving an orange effect. Form and substance good on a medium, well branched stalk. Lucy W. Tinley, 'Midwest Iris Notes', A.I.S. Bulletin 75 (December 1939): 17.
NARANJA (Mitchell), a very good clump of this and undoubtedly striking when seen in mass. My impression is that the colour is not so dark and the falls lack the depth of orange colouring which was evident in my own garden last year. G. L. Pilkington, 'Iris Notes', A.I.S. Bulletin 74 (July 1939): 32.
Dreer's 1949 catalog notes; "Naranja. 3 ft. Yellow with pronounced orange tone. 60c each; 3 for $1.50; $4.75 per doz."
