From Cooley's Iris catalog, 1939: RED GLEAM - Years of painstaking work in hybridizing by Mr. Lapham have brought forth several of our finest reds and pinks. Now comes this newest and reddest of all reds, a color so startling and so vivid that critics declare, "It is almost scarlet! " Standards are of about the same intensity of color as the falls, but the latter are very velvety in texture and thus appear slightly darker. About the size and shape of Garden Magic. Height 36 inches. Very few plants. Each $25.00.
However, RED GLEAM is without doubt the finest introduction in reds to date, and N-20 indicates that Mr. Lapham is making real strides in his breeding to improve color in the red class. William J. McKee, "Our President Travels", A.I.S. Bulletin 78 (Jul. 1940): 10.

RED GLEAM, which had made a splendid show in my own garden on a one-year plant, was even better in his garden on two-year plants and is the finest and reddest red self thus far introduced. Junius P. Fishburn, "Survey of 1940 Iris Season", A.I.S. Bulletin 78 (July 1940): 48.
