From Sass catalog, 1937: THE BLACK DOUGLAS (J. Sass, 1934)- S. dark violet, F. blackish violet. Blue beard tipped yellow. A fine dark colored iris. Branching stem 36 inches tall. $5.00
The Black Douglas: (J. Sass). Well branched tall stalk with very dark well shaped blackish purple flowers, not as well formed as one might like. [Belsley, Ray J., Varietal Comments. Bulletin of the American Iris Society 74 (July 1939), 19.]
 
From Robert Wayman catalog 1940_: THE BLACK DOUGLAS - "This is unquestionably the best of the new dark tones or so-called blacks. It is a very richly and deeply colored iris of perfect form, heavy substance, huge size and a prolific bloomer. The general effect is an intense deep blackish pansy violet and it seems to be cut out of velvet." Honorable Mention 1936.
