POSITION TITLE: Bulletin Policy 11-5-2015

  • Material of a scientific nature shall be submitted to the Scientific Committee for review before consideration for publication. The AIS Bulletin is not a scientific journal and only summaries of scientific material of interest to the general membership shall be published. The Bulletin may refer to the full scientific report printed elsewhere in a scientific journal. Summary reports of scholarship recipients would fall under this category.

  • National Convention dates for the Sections shall be published in the Bulletin. (AIS Bulletin #296, January '96)

  • All advertising shall identify the advertiser.

  • Paid memorials shall be noted as "Paid for by friends of---".

  • No political advertising will be accepted. (Part of our nonprofit requirements)

POSITION TITLE: Bulletin Editor

BASIC FUNCTION:

  • To serve and act as liaison between the AIS Board of Directors, AIS Guest Editor(s) and publication contractors.

    REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS:

  • The editor is elected by and responsible to the AIS Board of Directors.

    POSITION DETAILS AND MAJOR FUNCTIONS:

  • Shall edit content for subject focus, grammar, spelling, punctuation. Derogatory and irrelevant materials shall be removed.

  • Shall accept materials in accordance with the following statement approved by the Intellectual Property Committee November 1, 2014:

  • Shall be responsible for following AIS Bulletin Policy if approved.

All rights in submissions sent to IRISES or its agents acting as officers of The American Iris Society will be treated as unconditionally assigned for publication and copyright purposes. The editor retains the right to edit all submissions, and may provide editorial comment. Compliance with this policy is assumed at submission by the author, editor, and all other agents acting as officers of The American Iris Society.

  • Shall be appointed annually by the President of AIS and approved by the Board of Directors.

  • Shall be a salaried position and be a non-voting member of the Board of Directors.

  • May attend Spring and Fall board meetings to interact during discussion about topics that relate directly or indirectly to Bulletin content. Attendance is not mandatory and travel expenses are not reimbursable.

  • Shall review Bulletin expenses for general compliance with the annual AIS budget as determined at the AIS annual Fall Board meeting.

  • Shall present a proposed budget and possible options for discussion at the Fall board meeting.

  • Shall review and have the authority to edit photos and content of each Bulletin for compliance with AIS policy. (Situations requiring interpretation of policy may be brought to the Board’s attention for clarification.)

  • Shall find assistant editors.

  • Shall solicit articles and photos from a broad spectrum of contributors to represent the diverse interests of the AIS membership.

POSITION TITLE: Assistant Editor

BASIC FUNCTION:

  • A non-salaried position to provide content editing and proof reading support to the managing editor.

  • Shall serve at the request of the managing editor as required.

  • May provide or suggest content for the Bulletin.

POSITION TITLE: Art Director

  • POSITION TITLE: Art Director

BASIC FUNCTION:

  • To create layout and design of the quarterly AIS Bulletin.

    REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS:

  • The Art Director reports to the editor (or is also the editor).

    POSITION DETAILS AND MAJOR FUNCTIONS:

  • Shall be a salaried position.

  • Shall create the Bulletin layout and design using content provided by the editor.

  • Shall provide draft copy to the editor on the schedule specified and modify/correct the content as required by the editor.

  • Shall provide final copy to the editor on the schedule specified.

  • Shall provide content consistent with the requirements of the designated printer.
