1935, VvedenskyKopetdagensis

Iris kopetdagensis (Vved.)Mathew & Wendelbo (Aleksei Evanovich Vvedensky, 1935, Kopet Dag range, Northeastern Iran, Russia and Northwest to central Afghanistan); Subgenus Scorpiris (Juno); Height 4-14" (10-35 cm); Swollen storage roots, Although its 4 to 10 leaves are well developed at flowering time they continue to grow from their 10-25 cm length and 0.9 to 2.5 cm width. They bear smooth or very minutely scabrid narrow white margins. 3-9 Flowers, green with deep yellow, crenulate crest on falls,; as Juno kopetdagensis Vved. in Flora USSR. 2: 576 (1935) without Latin description, then validly published in Comp. FL. Asiae Mediae 2: 322(1971);
Iris kopetdagensis (Vved.) Mathew & Wendelbo in Flora Iranica p. 62. "There is no difficulty in distinguishing between I. kopetdaghensis and I. drepanophylla in the living state. The former has a more slender, greenish flower in which the claw of the fall is narrowly obovate-oblong with upturned margins. I. drepanophylla is usually more yellow in colour and the claw is rather broad with subparallel down-turned margins. The characters are more or less lost in pressed specimens. The margins of the leaves of drepanophylla are + or - shortly ciliate wheras inkopetdagensis they are mostly smooth or minutely scabrid only. The later appears to have longer filaments, but until more material can be studied it is impossible to ascertain the value of this character. The specimens of I. kopetdagensis from Central Afghanistan look on the whole smaller than the North East Persian and Turkmenian plants, but are generally collected at much higher altitude"--Mathew and Wendelbo in Flora Iranica.

Chromosome counts: See below: 2n=18, Bochantseva 1966; 2n=24 Zakharyeva & Makushenko 1969, 2n=18 Gustafson & Wendelbo 1975.
