Iris petrana Dinsmore. (Dinsmore, R. 1936, Ziza, Katrani, Palestine); Section Oncocyclus; Early bloom season; Height 8-10" (20-25 cm); Color Code R3L; "Flower 5-6 cm mostly dark brown, sometimes varying in color (dark purple, violet, rarely standards much lighter than falls) Falls recurved from middle, oblong ovate, generally uniform in color; signal nearly black; hairs of beard mostly yellow, dark-tipped on a cream ground; Standards obovate-unguiculate, erect-incurved, nearly uniform in color or with darker veins" as described by Feinbrun in Flora Palaestina. Originally described as Iris petrana Post in Flora Syria, Pales., Sinai, revis. Dinsmore 2: 600. Beirut 1933; Amer. Col. 1939.

Chromosome counts; 2n=20-Awishai & Zohary 1980.

Synonyms; Considered by some as a synonym of Iris nigricans but returned to specific rank in Flora Palaestina Vol. 4 (1986). Registered in 1939 checklist as PETRANA a cutivar of nigricans.
