From Melrose Gardens catalog, 1968: BALKAN GLACIER (Ben R. Hager '68) 36" Midseason ((((Harbinger X (((Chivalryx Sharkskin x I. balkana)) X Blue Silhouette)))). Four generations from I. balkana (a dwarfof 4") and still getting the pastel amoena pattern with the typical color concentration below the beard. This is, as far as we can find out, the first Tall Bearded Iris with I. balkana in its background, to be introduced. It is naturally of interest to breeders, but as you can see by the picture, it is also a truly fine iris. Large flowers with very wide fluted petals. The standards are ice white and the falls ice blue with a concentration of color in the center of the petal below the yellow beard. You will, of course, note that all the parents of this iris (including I. balkana) are blue or violet. This amoena pattern is a dominant characteristic in breeding with at least half of the seedlings showing the amoena effect in each of all four generations, but how did it get there? $25.00
