From Fleur De Lis Gardens catalog, 1956: DARK HALO (Tompkins 1956) M. 38 in. ((49-177A Starkist Sib. x Sass 50-96) x (49-177B Starkist S!b. x Sass 50-96)). Sass 50-96 is from a seedling from Blue Shimmer x (((M ·Louis Aureau x (Tiffany Sib. x Amitola)) x ((Orloff x R. Coach) x (Siegfried x Tiffany Sib.)) x A Sib.)) Crossed with a seedling from (((Midwest Gem x Dore) x Prairie Sunset)) x Flora Zenor) x (Aleppo Plains x (Imp. R. Pollock x Self). Dark Halo will be of special interest to those who attended the 1950 convention at Omaha and Sioux City. At that time Henry Sass had a new seedling plicata, No. 50-96, which had a cream ground and a very deep purple edge. It drew a great deal of attention and became known popularly as the Sass black plicata. As I had been working for some time to achieve plicatas with pure white petals and solid borders around both the standards as well as the falls I used pollen of this on varieties segregated for the purpose. When these crosses bloomed I found many interesting advances among them. Further crosses were made among these and in 1954 Dark Halo was selected from the lines of whites with dark borders. Dark Halo has a pure white ground with a faint breath-like hint of cream and a broad border around both the standards and falls of such a dark purple that even at a short distance it appears black. The flowers are quite large, of excellent form and finish and have extra heavy substance. A light ruffling adds much grace and charm while a full rich beard of the same color as the border rounds out the pattern. Our cover picture is an excellent likeness. Plants are hardy and the stalks are tall and well branched. No. 54-1 08A. 35.00
