(TB) 'Grand Rapids'

1966, Tompkins

'Grand Rapids' ( Chet Tompkins, R. 1966) Sdlg. 61-61B. TB, 38" (97 cm), Midseason to late bloom. Copper self. (57-55 x 'Allaglow') X 'War Bonnet'. Fleur de Lis 1966.

GRAND RAPIDS (Tompkins '66) M.L. 38 in. (57-55 x Allaglow) x War Bonnet. Another giant, this is fully as large as Brigantine and quite as spectacular. A brilliant, near self of orange, it is in reality a blend of sleek glistening Caramel, Orange Copper and Sandlewood Orange with an undertone of mingled Amber rose and Fulvous Orange. A highlight of shimmering, frostylike Lilac at the tip of a full orange beard accents its brightness. It is beautifully formed with broad rounded petals. In cool seasons, a sudden day of extra warm sunshine invariably brings out a deep Grass green plicatalike stitching around both the standards and the flaring falls, giving it a most exotic appearance. This is probably due to the 57-55 parentage as this came from blends, plies and the greenish Desert Flower. Wonderfully branched stalks. No. 61-61 B. Net 25.00. [Fleur De Lis Gardens, Canby, Oregon, Catalog, 1966]

GRAND RAPIDS (Tompkins, '66) ML. 38" Each $5.00. A giant blend in brilliantly glistening shades of carmel, orange and copper, with an undertone of amber-rose. Beard is deep orange with a highlight of lilac at the tip. Wonderful form, the broad petals rounded and of heavy substance. Well branched. Rather late. [Cooley's Iris, 1972]
