'Mexican Hat' (Roy P. Rogers, R. 1957). TB, 36" (91 cm), Midseason bloom. Color Class-V3, Standards Light pansy-violet; falls reddish violet shading to ruby-red at edge. ('Burgundy Rose' x 'Dolly Varden') x 'Chantilly'. Roy Rogers 1958.

From AIS Bulletin #153, April 1959: Introduction: MEXICAN HAT (Burgundy Rose + Dolly Varden) + Chantilly. Medium early. Height 30-36 inches. This iris is most difficult to describe because of its many color shades. The center of the falls is a reddish pansy-violet, shading to a ruby red near the outer edge. At the edge of the falls, opposite the beard, the color changes to a garnet brown. The beard is lemon-yellow and there is considerable lemon coloring in the throat of the flower. The flower has some veining in the haft and below the heard. Flowers are twice the size of Chantilly, with nice flaring falls and closed standards. Falls and standards are waved and nicely laced hut with less lacing than is found in Carmela or Queen's Lace. The standards are a light, rather dull shade of pansy-violet. This flower has a substance found in few iris. Our intense Colorado sunlight and a humidity which sometimes drops to 3 or 4 per cent often wilts many of the large newer varieties within a few hours or a day at most. This flower has remained in perfect condition for three days, when exposed to the most intense sun and heat. When taken inside and kept in a cool place, it has kept its form and beauty for over a week. Price $20.00.
