Awaiting original catalog description From Milliken Gardens catalog, 1940: MODOC (Essig) This remarkable iris has a velvety depth of color that is unsurpassed. It gives the effect of being almost black, although in reality it is a very deep rich purple mixed with shades of dark brown. Very large flowers and a striking iris. 2-1/2 feet. 2Sc 3 for 5Oc.
Modoc: A rich black purple with large blossoms, bunched at top of stalk, color exciting. [Belsley, Ray J., Varietal Comments. Bulletin of the American Iris Society 74 (July 1939), 18.]
