(TB) 'Mystic Shrine'

1944, Weed National

'Mystic Shrine' ( Howard Weed National Iris Gardens , R. 1942, I. 1944) TB. Midseason to late bloom. Color Class-S6M reverse. Slight fragrance.

From Howard Weed's catalog for National Iris Gardens, 1946: "Novel blend. Standards are closed, slightly ruffled, of copper lightly washed rose. Falls light rose, washed copper at edges, red-brown veining on gold ground at haft, orange beard."

From the National Iris Garden catalog for 1947: "No richer shrine in all the floral kingdom than this novel blend. The flower, a copper rose ground with heavy brown venations suggestive of a plicata, is mysteriously veiled in metallic lavender. The plants multiply rapidly, blooming late over a period of three weeks."

From Western Iris Garden catalog, 1948: MYSTIC SHRINE (National, 1944). ML. 36" Descriptive adjectives are in short supply to properly extol the attributes of this novel color arrangement. Red-brown veining on gold ground at the haft upon which an orange beard rests seems to extend its color influence to brighten the balance of the flower. Slightly ruffled standards are closed and of blue gray, washed lavender. Falls are of light gray, washed lavender. Distant effect is blue gray. The whole pattern intrigues on close inspection. $2.50
