(AB) Arilbreds

OnlookerHybrids have been produced from crossing the arils with the more common bearded irises. These are called "arilbreds" (AB), and are usually very easy to grow and still display the spectacular features of the arils. Most arilbreds are tall and have large blooms. They usually bloom earlier than the TBs, with the SDBs and the IBs. For tips on cultivation, see Cultivation of Aril and Arilbred Irises.
The Aril Society International further subdivides the arilbreds into nine categories, based on the relative content of oncocyclus, Regelia, and bearded ancestry.
There are also small arilbreds, categorized as arilbred dwarfs (ABD) or arilbred medians (ABM).
These Iris compete for The William Mohr Medal (for arilbreds of less than 1/2 aril content) or the Clarence G. White Medal (for arilbreds of 1/2 or more aril content and pure arils). Articles about Arilbreds
