From National Iris Gardens catalog for 1939: POLAR KING (Donahue) E. 44". This variety is the very finest and best spring blooming white iris, and also is the most dependable and beautiful fall bloomer of any color. It has an exceptionally
long blooming season, being the first tall bearded white to bloom in the spring and also the very last. Stalks are tall, well-branched, and bear as many as 12 perfectly formed blossoms, each of which lasts from 3 to 5 days and improves with each day after opening—just the opposite from most whites. Polar King is a very dependable fall blooming variety, flowering profusely in Massachusetts each autumn for the last six years. If is the only iris ever to receive an Award of Merit from the Massachusetts Horticultural Society on the basis of its November blooming. Polar King has received both Honorable Mention and Award of Merit certificates from the American Iris Society—awards which no other iris has received before its introduction. The long, spreading, oblong flower is compact and well-balanced with petals of good substance exuding a spicy fragrance. S. are conic domed and F. are flaring. Last year we considered it a privilege to be selected by the famous hybridizer, T. F. Donahue, as the first grower to place Polar King on the commercial market. $25.00.
