From Supplement To The Comprehensive Checklist of Aril and Arilbred Iris by Sharon McAllister, April 2000: BROWN BETTY AB (Clarence G. White, R. 1933). Sdlg #NIA.TB, tall, M. Mauna Loa X "onco". AIS Color Class: S6D (yellow squalens with bitone pattern). No description in '76 Checklist. Rainbow: "Blend of cinnamon, chestnut and soothing lavender." Vallette: "copper, shaded lavender." C.G.White, 1934. Notes: Counted as having 48 chromosomes but classified as an OB by the '76 committee. Ref: AIS '39, p. 140; AIS '49, p. 60; ASI '76, p. 21;ASI '78 YB, p. 64; Vallette, p. 175. |
From Milliken catalog, 1940: BROWN BETTY (C. G. White) Whether it be a pudding or an iris it seems to be popular. One has cinnamon flavor, the other cinnamon color- cinnamon brown and more browns, copper tones and hushed lavenders. One shade predominates here and another there, and yet all is smoothly blended so that there are no harsh contrasts, no sharp demarcations of color. The standards are perfect in form from first to last, the falls at first are softly drooping, then widely flaring, like giant butterflies pausing on the tall, widely branched slender stems. It is a delightful iris. 3-1/2 feet. See illustration, page 9. 60c; 3 for $1.50. |
