From Milliken catalog, 1940: NEAR EAST (C. G. White). A fascinating addition to the unusual group of irises which we introduced for Mr. White last year. Near East is one of the so-called "wide crosses," being a pogocyclus hybrid. It therefore possesses the exotic beauty of the oncocyclus and at the same time the easy growing qualities of the hardy tall bearded iris. The ground color of Near East is a soft creamy yellow and both standards and falls are veined and dotted with deep maroon-purple. The falls are quite stiff and horizontal and are prominently veined, while the standards are rather faintly marked, thus giving them a yellow effect. Near East grows to a height of about two feet, has medium-sized flowers, and foliage that is more slender and less conspicuous than the average bearded iris. Hardy. $3.50.
From Supplement To The Comprehensive Checklist of Aril and Arilbred Iris by Sharon McAllister, April 2000: NEAR EAST AB (Clarence G. White, R. 1938). Seedling # NIA. 1MB, medium height, early. Onco X bearded. AIS Color Class: Y8D (yellow ground with red feathering). '76 CL: Yellow with dark reddish pattern. Court of Iris: "ruffled light yellow is flushed and marbled with rose and heavily veined maroon." Rainbow: "Light yellow, marbled and overlaid with maroon dots and fine lines. Bold dark maroon veins at haft." Vallette: "light yellow, netted and dotted maroon" 1939. Notes: Counted as a 22 chromosome diploid, an OB in both systems.
