From Milliken catalog, 1945: TOUSSAINT L'OUVERTURE (Schreiner). A deep claret flower which is so velvety that it looks almost black in some lights. It is low growing, has flowers of medium size and blooms early. $.60, 3 for $1.50
From Supplement To The Comprehensive Checklist of Aril and Arilbred Iris by Sharon McAllister, April 2000: TOUSSAINT L'OUVERTURE AB (Robert Schreiner, R. 1939). Seedling# NIA. IMB, medium height, E. Parentage unknown. AIS Color Class: R7D (red self with red secondary tones). '76 CL: Dark red self. Rainbow: "Gleaming ruby black". Vallette: "very dark brownish purple, slightly onco; rather big for its height." 1939. Notes: The '49 Checklist calls this an onco hybrid, but '76 committee assigned an OGB- code, chromosome-set code can't be determined. Ref: AIS '49, p. 245; ASI '76, p. 85; Vallette, p.179.
