In The Gardeners' Chronicle May 29, 1904; There was are article TWO NEW HYBRID IRISES. It read "One of the most interesting features at the meeting of the Royal Horticultural Society on May 17 was a collection of new Irises shown by C.G. Van Tubergen, junr., Haarlem, Holland. Seven varieties were given awards by the Floral Committee, and of these we illustrate two on pp. 348, 349 that obtained First Class Certificates. They all belonged to the Onco-Regelia group. "Charon," shown in fig. 150, ......... Artemis" (fig. 151) is remarkable for the very large size of the standards, which are rich vinous-purple in color, netted all over with darker veins and small spots. The falls are more distinctly drooping than those in most of the other flowers. They are of a rich violet colour, with an ample blotch of a dark tone at the base."

From The Court Of Iris catalog, 1955: Artemis was the twin sister of Apollo. Zeus and Leta were their parents. Artemis, or Diana, was the goddess of the chase--and small wonder for her father was constantly on the chase much to Hera's (his wife) disgust. A stunning flower with korolkowi form. The standards and falls are an off-white upon which is laid a heavy patterning of dark purple. In the falls it is concentrated into a blotch upon which is a black signal and black beard. Very good for hybrid work. Very early bloom. 20". 75ยข.
From Supplement To The Comprehensive Checklist of Aril and Arilbred Iris by Sharon McAllister, April 2000: ARTEMIS AR (C. G. Van Tubergen, BRS). Sdlg #NIA.RC. Height and bloom season NIA. I.korolkowii var. violacea X I.bamumae subsp. Mariae. No description in '76 CL. Court of Iris: "Elongated korolkowii type bloom, off-white patterned in carmine-violet."Rainbow:"VE-20". Ground silvery cream, almost entirely overlaid and veined in bright, yet dark carmine-violet. Effect heightened by a heavy black beard and striking black signal patch."Valette: "rounded, onco-type flowers, silvery cream, entirely overlaid and veined dark carmine-violet; black beard and signal." Van Tubergen, 1908. Notes: Name approved; Mathew does not classify this, but I.bamumae subsp. mariae was considered a synonym for I mariae in the '76 system; counted as a 21-chromosome diploid, an RC in both systems.
