From the "The World of Irises" Chapter 5. © 1978 AIS
"In the three preceding chapters we have discussed the
origins of the tall bearded irises, largest of the six horticultural classes of bearded irises, consisting of all bearded irises over 71 cm (27 inches) in height. Of the other five classes the miniature dwarf class, with height of 20 cm (8 inches), includes a number of small species and their hybrids. Intermediate between these extremes are four median classes, two hybrid classes consisting of first [SDB] and advanced generation progeny [IB] of tall beardeds with smaller iris types, and the other two consisting entirely of small segregates of the tall beardeds or of their prototypes. The border irises from the more recent tetraploid tall beardeds are presented in chapter 6; the table irises (miniature tall bearded) discussed in the present chapter are small selections from the simpler, usually diploid, ancestors of the tall beardeds. The four Median Iris classes are sponsored and promoted by the Median Iris Society, a Section of the American Iris Society."
