Analysis of clonal colour diversity within a population of Iris pumila has revealed a relatively equitable distribution of morphologically distinct clones among different colour classes. The existence of clonal diversity in the population of I. pumila implies the independent origin of multiple clones by recurrent sexual recruitment. This study has clearly shown that the frequency distribution of genetically diverse clones was not equal in all sites throughout the population. It was highly correlated with the various habitat types. Adaptive differentiation to alternative niches in the environment and differential attractiveness to pollinating insects may account for the persistence of the flower colour polymorphism in this taxon. The dispersion of individual clones over the I. pumila population was mostly random.
