The 1939 Checklist notes; "M. van Waveren & Sons, Inc., 101 W. 31st St. New York, N. Y. and Hillegom, Holland. Founded 1822. Wholesale growers of Tulips, Daffofils, Bulbous Irises etc. About 1925 they established bulb farms near Norflk, Va. for growing Daffodils and later in Martland for growing bulbous Irises. Mr. Van waveren is probably the largest exporter of bulbs in Holland. He went to England in 1841 and took up hybridizing and in his first 25 years of work occupied himself most with Narcissi, producing large trumpet varieties. In 1921 his nurseries produced 850,000 Spanish Iris Bulbs, and of other Irises, 150,000 bulbs! |
