The following is reported in the Cornell University Agricultural Experiment Station Memoir 100; 'Abdul Aziz' (Listed by Barr in 1876) "Color effect a mauve or lavender and purple bicolor, blended and veined on the outer haft; size fair; form short, open, rounded; flowering habit free; tall bearded class; height 24 inches; branching short, above center. A flower of poor to good substance; frail to firm texture; smooth surface; good fragrance. Useful for low mass of bloom. Standards lobelia-violet or mauve-lavender, tinged with yellow, finely dusted with gold on the lower purple-tinged blade, claw bronzed at base; segment as a whole domed overarched; blade ovate, notched, undulate, frilled, revolute, smooth or slightly cocked; size 1 ½ in. wide, 2 ½ in. long. Falls velvety prune purple or nigrosin violet, veined with brown on the bronzed haft, with a lilac-white ground at base of blade; carriage flaring to drooping; wedge-shaped, convex, spatulate, slightly pinched; size 1 ½ in. wide, 2 ½ in. long. Minor parts; beard fine, sparse, projecting prominently, orange-colored; haft broad, channeled; reticulations broken though fine, widely spaced; style-branches narrow, overarching, bronzed; crest small, fringed; pollen plentiful; spathe-valves inflated, one-half scarious. Growth moderate; increase rapid; habit open to compact; foliage stiff, leaves slender to broad, color deep glaucous yellow-green; 2 blooms open at once, floriferous; stalk erect, with 4-5 buds. One of the older squalens varieties recommended by the American Iris Society for discard. On close inspection of the deep lavender standards they appear to be sprinkled at the edge with gold dust and are delightfully effective in the sunlight." |
From Bonnewitz catalog 1920: ABDUL AZIZ. S. white edged with lavender; F. cream bordered with lavender and with lavender penciling at the edges; foliage 15-21 in.; blooms 21-26 in. 25 cts.; $1.50 a doz. |
