  • "In our Botanical garden interest in the varieties of the garden group "Japanese irises" first appeared more than 100 years ago, Edward Regel former Director of the Botanical garden, however, extremely beautiful and original varieties, discharged from Germany, unfortunately, in the open ground did not winter. In those days, they were grown as a pot culture, with the recommendation of cleaning for the winter in the basement. In 1951, the Botanical garden of St. Petersburg from the black sea coast of the Caucasus from the farm " Southern cultures (Adler) received a large collection of irises of Japanese selection from the gardener Vasily Alferov. More than 20 varieties were planted on the experimental ridges Of the large garden of the Botanical garden. Our humid climate with cold winters and low temperatures did not suit exotic varieties of Japanese breeding. Almost all of them died in the winter of 1953-1954, However G. I. Rodionenko during this period managed to perform a series of crosses with iris obtained from Gornoaltaysky experimental station of I. V. Vereshagina. Thus in 1956 were received the first winter-hardy variety "Vasili Alfiorov" (Sano Watashi x I. ensata). For a long time this seedling showed good results, spending without shelter in the Iridarium" (Website of the Iridarium of the Botanical garden of the Botanical Institute of V. L. Komarov, RAS.
