Charlotte Iris Society (CIS)

An Affiliate of the American Iris Society

Mission Statement: The mission of CIS is to organize and disseminate knowledge of the genus iris, while fostering its preservation, enjoyment and continued development. The CIS welcomes all people.

The Charlotte Iris Society (CIS) was organized on March 1, 1948. Three years later, CIS held its first spring iris show at a local Sears Store (1951). They have held a spring iris show most years since.

In 1994, CIS became an affiliate of the American Iris Society. They have had a number of regional iris leaders, national iris awards, hybidizers and Master Gardeners in their membership. They created an endowment scholarship with Central Piedmont Community College (CPCC) in 1998 for the purpose of providing tuition assistance to a student of the college’s Horticulture Program. They have contributed to the beautification of University of North Carolina at Charlotte (UNCC), CPCC, Duke Mansion and many other locations.

They normally meet on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to noon in February, April, September, October and November. Their meetings are usually held at the Charlotte Council House at 1820 East Seventh Street in Charlotte. They also hold a Spring Iris Show that is open to the public in late April as well as an Annual Rhizome Sale at the Regional Farmers Market in August. CIS dues are $10 for an individual or family annual membership.

If you want to grow, learn about, and talk to other iris growers, this is the club for you!

Additional information about joining CIS can be found on our website Charlotte Iris Society under Membership. We also have a Facebook group – Charlotte Iris Society.
