Hybridizer Clarence (Guy) Monroe Anderson

Mountain Home, Idaho, USA

Clarence "Guy" Monroe Anderson, 97, of Mountain Home, passed away on Monday, April 25, 2011, at his home.

Guy was raised on the family farm in Havner (now Grier), N.M. He told of many wonderful times there. They moved into Clovis, N.M., when he was in high school. He graduated in 1932 and went to McPherson College in Kansas for a semester and to Eastern New Mexico University for a semester. He had many jobs as a boy and young man, but ended up working construction building roads and bridges.

In early 1941, while working on the railroad and traveling home for a visit, there was a young lady sitting alone on the train. He asked to sit by her and after a letter courtship he and Mary Harkins were married Oct. 21, 1941, in Clovis.

They lived in Oklahoma City, Okla., where Mary was from, then moved back to New Mexico to farm. While there, daughters Janet and Siri and son Ernest were born. They moved to Cedaredge, Colo., and David was born there.

Because of Mary's health, they had to move to a lower altitude thus, they moved to Idaho, first living in Jerome then coming to Mountain Home where he had a laundromat. He became a postman and was the first rural letter carrier in Mountain Home. He later transferred to the Post Office in King Hill. He retired in the early 1990s when Mary became ill.

Guy was an avid gardener and especially enjoyed growing iris. He was known for his iris garden on the corner of American Legion and 14th Street.

He also wrote poems and painted.

Guy is survived by son, Ernie Anderson, of Hammett, son David Anderson, of Spokane, daughter Janet Stickney, of Nevada, four grandchildren, Lee, David, Molly and Ryan, three great-grandchildren, Elias, Connor and Anderson, nieces, nephews, his beloved cats, Snoopy and Tippy, and his caregivers, Diane, Dan, Sue and Carol.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Nels and Elsie, his wife, Mary, all eight siblings - brothers Earl, Roy and Harvey and sisters Amye, Pearl, Grace, Myrtle and Fern, his infant daughter, Siri, and granddaughter Kristen Blake.
