BORDENTOWN CITY, NJ — Experienced gardeners, or novices who just want to keep Bordentown City beautiful, are wanted to help take care of one of the town's gardens.
The Bordentown City Green Team is seeking volunteers to help maintain the Franklin Carr Iris Garden, located at Hilltop Park in Bordentown City.
Franklin Carr graduated from William MacFarland High School in 1936 and studied horticulture at Penn State and Rutgers before becoming a world-famous Iris hybridizer who won 12 international awards in Europe for his blooms. While Carr developed many Iris hybrids, according to the American Iris Society, he was best known for his white Pontiff Iris, which was memorialized as a porcelain sculpture by the Boehm Porcelain Company of Trenton and was even presented to Pope John Paul II. He also had work commissioned for Buckingham Palace. Gardens in New Zealand, Newfoundland and Scotland feature Carr's irises.
