Hybridizer Glenn F. Hanson (1914-1981)
Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA
The Iris Society Of Minnesota, Region 8 and the American Iris Society lost on of its most enthusiastic and knowledgeable supporters with the passing of Glenn F. Hanson on Friday, February 13, 1981. Glenn had been in ill h
ealth for a number of years and left very peacefully late Friday night at his home. Surviving him are his wife, Zula, two sons, Larry and John, and six grandchildren.
Glenn served as an officer in all branches of iris societies from the local to the national level. He was President of the Iris Society of Minnesota 1962—1963, Regional Vice President of Region 8 1965—1967, and served on the Board of Directors of the American Iris Society 1970—1976. He was an Honorary Judge of the AIS and was awarded its Distinguished Service Medal In 1976.
In cooperation with his wife, Zula, he has operated Riverdale Iris Gardens which has the most comprehensive and extensive listing of small irises available. Their business has been worldwide. While Glenn registered and introduced only one of his own irises, 'Auf Wiedersehn', a TB, he did encourage other hybridizers and introduced many of their award-winning small irises.
Glenn Hanson was an authority on his speciality and shared his knowledge gladly with other people. He wrote articles for numerous publications and was a sought-after speaker for iris groups as well as garden clubs. His 'The Beginners Column" originally published in the ISM "News and Views", was widely read and reprinted by other iris publications, including the AIS Bulletin. All of us - his friends of ISM, Region 8, AIS - will miss him
