Hybridizer Dr. Arthur Percy Saunders (1869-1953)

Clinton, New York, USA

Arthur was a Canadian hybridist, a regional V.P. and a director of the American Iris Society. Born in London, Ontario. he was the son of William (Sr, 1836-1914) the founding Director of the Canadian Government Experiment Farms between 1886 and 1911. Arthur moved to the US to become Professor of Chemistry at Hamilton College in Clinton, N.Y. He was always interested in botany, gardening and experimenting with plants and became an expert hybridist, having much success with peonies, using the careful methods of the accurate, thoughtful scientist. Between 1911 and 1924, he was secretary and editor of the American Peony Society, and later president for some years. (AIS Check Lest 1939 pp.59-60) (Researched by Don McQueen)
